About the Clinic Director

Yumna Baqai
Registered Psychotherapist (Q)
Clinic Director

Hi, my name is Yumna Baqai!

Before formally stepping into counselling, my background was rooted in addictions and mental health work. I have over seven years of experience in the mental health field, working with diverse populations, including women, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those navigating substance use and other addictions. I have also spent years volunteering with the Distress Centre of GTA, providing support on general and suicide crisis lines.

Areas of Focus: I specialize in working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Autism + ADHD (AuDHD). Additionally, I support clients dealing with trauma and PTSD, abuse, anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and Highly Sensitive Personalities (HSP). My experience also extends to working with individuals facing addictions, substance use concerns, violence, suicidal ideations (both active and passive), and self-harm.

Education & Training: I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Toronto, followed by a Post-Graduate Certificate in Addictions and Mental Health from Durham College. I then completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) at Yorkville University, where I successfully completed my practicum fully virtually.

My Approach to Mental Health & Therapy: I believe that there is no single “right” way to help an individual in therapy—each person has unique needs, and therapy should reflect that. My approach is integrative and tailored, drawing from multiple therapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Psychoanalytic approaches, Schema Therapy, and Experiential Therapies. My practice is trauma-informed and culturally sensitive , ensuring that each client receives support that respects their personal experiences, background, and goals. I started Mind Mechanic Therapy to provide clients from diverse backgrounds a safe space where they are treated with a tailored treatment from a location they choose based on their comfort level. As a therapy client myself, I always preferred picking my location because it just made it easier for me opening up about sensitive issues. This was something I struggled to do so in an in-person setting.

Stuff I enjoy: Reading, writing, listening to music, watching movies, spending time with my husband, spending time with my family, playing with my cats and cleaning (I find that so relaxing). I enjoy going on vacations to places where there is an seaside beach where I am not afraid of getting drenched. I am currently contemplating learning horse back riding and guitar, may be in future piano as well. I have recently gotten into building lego, never knew this was something I’ll get so into.

My goal for my interns: I aim to make the journey stress-free and supportive. I remember being an intern myself not too long ago and found that having a helpful supervisor and clinic director can make internship an enjoyable and exploratory experience. My goal is to model myself after the supportive team I had worked with during my intership. I look forward to getting to know you all and supporting you on your journey as future interns!
